Look Who’s Thinking Now…
Remember DeepSeek? That Chinese AI studio everyone forgot about while watching the OpenAI tease o3?
Well, they just crashed back into the scene with R1, an open-source model that's giving OpenAI's o1 a run for its money.
And when we say money, we mean 90-95% less of it.
What’s up with R1?
R1 outshines o1 on AIME, MATH-500, and SWE-bench Verified, excelling in programming tasks, word problems, and evaluation-heavy benchmarks.
The model’s weights are available via Hugging Face so anyone can build with it openly.
Boasting 671 billion parameters, R1 is a behemoth. However, DeepSeek also offers smaller, distilled versions (1.5–70 billion parameters) capable of running on laptops, while the full model is accessible via API at 90–95% lower prices than OpenAI’s o1.
The model even had its own "aha moment" during development, discovering new reasoning techniques by itself:
So What?
By going open source and sharing their training details, it seems DeepSeek is keeping alive the original mission that OpenAI started with…
The whale in their logo might be a gentle reminder: sometimes the biggest splash comes from the player you forgot was in the pool. 🐋

And The Oscar Goes to… An Algorithm?
Move over CGI controversy, there's a new debate in Tinseltown. The Brutalist, a film gunning for Oscar gold, just admitted to using AI as its secret sauce – and film purists are not exactly throwing a party…
Brady Corbet is facing backlash following its editor’s admission of using AI tools to enhance the film. Editor Dávid Jancsó revealed that AI software was employed to refine the Hungarian dialogue of stars Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones and to create architectural visuals for the movie’s final sequence.
Using Respeecher, a Ukrainian AI tool, Jancsó fine-tuned Brody and Jones’ Hungarian accents, citing the language’s unique complexity. While keeping the actors’ performances intact, AI adjusted individual letters for precision.
The final sequence also features AI-generated architectural renderings inspired by Brody’s character, enhancing the cinematic style within budget and time constraints.
So What?
Jancsó defends AI’s use as a practical tool, arguing that it streamlined processes without compromising artistry.
However, the controversy underscores broader industry debates about AI’s place in creative fields.
While some cry "artistic sacrilege," others see it as just another tool in the filmmaker's kit – like switching from film to digital, but with more algorithms.

ChatGPT Gets a To-Do List
ChatGPT is going agentic.
OpenAI unveiled ChatGPT Tasks last week to help users schedule, automate, and streamline daily activities. All within the app.
Once you create a task, you’ll get an automated email linking to the task output.
Sam Altman himself hinted at this shift, saying, “The future is agentic,” and predicted agents would join the workforce this year. Looks like that future is here.
Here’s how to set it up, along with some use cases I’ve been personally exploring.👇
Go to ChatGPT and start a new chat.
Toggle the model selection dropdown menu to GPT-4o with scheduled tasks.
Prompt away with tasks you need done!
🔥 Pro Tip: In the web app, you can go ahead and edit or pause the task once it is scheduled!
Use-Cases:
Health and Wellness
Prompt: “Remind me to log my meals at 8 AM, 1 PM, and 7 PM, and record my workout at 6 PM daily. At 8 PM, provide a summary of my activity with a score from 1 to 10.”
Daily Python Tips
Prompt: “Send me one useful Python programming tip every weekday at 5 PM.”
