OpenAI’s o3 is a Huge Step Towards AGI

OpenAI wrapped up its 12-day of “Shipmas” event with a showstopper: o3, the next evolution in reasoning models.

Building on the success of its predecessor, o1, the o3 model family includes o3 and a distilled version, o3-mini, fine-tuned for specific tasks.

The numbers are wild. The model…

• Crushes coding benchmarks, up 22.8% from o1.

• Hits 87.5% on AGI-related tests (above human-level!).

• Aces math exams with 96.7% accuracy.

What’s different from o1?

o3 introduces “adjustable reasoning time,” allowing users to set compute levels to low, medium, or high. More compute means better task performance, enabling the model to “think” before responding with a private chain of thought.

So What?

This release is going to be insane.

Are we witnessing the dawn of AGI? Maybe. But accessible AGI? That's a different story. The computational demands of these reasoning models suggest we might need a different approach for truly democratized, human-level AI.

Safety researchers can sign up for o3-mini preview now, with broader access coming end of January. The full o3 release date? That's still TBD.
