OpenAI Hits Pause on The Profit Pivot

OpenAI is staying true to its roots. After months of public scrutiny, legal pressure, and internal debate, the company has reversed its plan to become a fully for-profit entity.

Instead, it will retain its nonprofit governance while restructuring its business arm into a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC).

What’s changing (and what’s not)?

• The for-profit LLC will convert into a PBC, a structure designed to balance shareholder interests with a broader mission.

• OpenAI’s nonprofit board will continue to oversee the PBC and become a significant shareholder, ensuring that the company’s original mission—to ensure AGI benefits all of humanity—remains central.

• The new structure allows for traditional stock ownership, removing the previous cap on investor returns, which could attract more substantial funding.

So What?

For a hot minute, it looked like OpenAI might join the ranks of Big Tech by restructuring into a fully for-profit juggernaut.

Instead, it’s doubling down on its original mission: build safe AGI and make sure the benefits don’t just land in the laps of a few Silicon Valley insiders.

By keeping the nonprofit in control, OpenAI is betting it can raise massive capital while still maintaining public trust and mission alignment. Whether this hybrid structure becomes a model for the rest of the AI world, or a case study in complexity, remains to be seen. But one thing’s clear: Sam’s keeping one foot in the startup world, and the other in the public square.

Here’s how you can create these flows with OpenAI’s o4-mini in ChatGPT:

1. Navigate to ChatGPT.

2. Toggle on the o4-mini model (top left dropdown menu)

3. Type in a prompt like: “Help me create a n8n workflow to score leads. The leads are in Google Sheets for me, use the agent configuration. Return the output in json so i can input it directly.” The more specific the better.

4. Copy the generated json into a text editor, save it as a .json file.

5. Open up your n8n workspace and upload it directly (3 dots on the top right, import from file)!
