Microsoft’s AI Hunger Games Includes Half a Million NVIDIA Chips
In a year marked by an insatiable appetite for AI, Microsoft reportedly purchased more than 500,000 NVIDIA chips—twice as many as any of its tech rivals.
Talk about power-hungry (literally). A portion of this haul is likely fueling OpenAI, with Microsoft as both a major backer and a participant in OpenAI’s massive $6.6 billion funding round in October.
Key Insights:
Alongside NVIDIA’s GPUs, Microsoft is developing its own custom AI chips, codenamed Maia, revealed during its Ignite conference in late 2023.
In September, Microsoft inked a deal to revive the Three Mile Island nuclear plant to secure its power output for 20 years to support its data centers.
So What?
Let's be real, Microsoft looked at the AI race and decided second place isn't in their vocabulary.
Between their OpenAI bromance and these massive infrastructure moves, they're basically saying "Oh, you think AI is expensive? Hold my Azure credits…"

Tool Spotlight
Show and Tell With ChatGPT
OpenAI's Shipmas keeps delivering, and this time it's something we've all been waiting for. ChatGPT can now see and discuss what you're showing it, combining Advanced Voice Mode with video capabilities.
The update is surprisingly intuitive: just flip on your camera, point it at anything interesting, and start a natural conversation about what ChatGPT sees.
Whether you're troubleshooting tech issues through screen sharing or asking about objects in your environment, ChatGPT can now engage in visual conversations.
And because it's the holiday season, OpenAI threw in a festive bonus: a Santa mode complete with a jolly voice option!
To enable video with Advanced Voice Mode:
Download/open ChatGPT on your iPhone or Android.
Tap the sound-wave icon next to the chat window.
Hit the video icon on the bottom left to show ChatGPT your surroundings, or tap the three-dot menu to share your screen with ChatGPT.
To use the new Santa voice, get to the advanced voice mode screen, click the knob buttons on the top right, and swipe until you find Santa!
