Meta is Fed Up with Google

+ Apple Intelligence has Shipped to an iPhone Near You 📱

Meta just might be getting into search, more great stuff from Anthropic, and Apple Intelligence finally drops…

In this edition we’ll be covering…

  • Meta & Search

  • Claude’s revamped Data Analysis functionality

  • Apple Intelligence

  • And much more…

Let’s get into it!

Meta’s Quest For Data Just Got Personal

Mark Zuckerberg, apparently not content with just being everyone's digital landlord, is pushing for more independence from titans Google and Microsoft.

It looks like the tech giant is developing an AI-powered search engine to do just that.

Additionally:

  • The company aims to use Meta AI to provide contextual, personalized search results, enabling a more conversational, tailored user experience.

  • The move also signals an effort to tap into the search market and differentiate itself with AI-powered capabilities.

  • Meta recently struck a multi-year deal with Reuters, allowing its chatbot to use the news outlet’s articles in responses—further positioning the company to expand its search capabilities.

So What?

The push toward search aligns with CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s desire for more autonomy, ensuring Meta isn’t dependent on Google or Microsoft for search access.

It’s unclear whether Meta currently pays either company for that access, but it might not need to in the future—its web crawler was spotted in the wild months ago, suggesting the company is building its own database of information for its chatbot.

Somewhere in Mountain View, California, a Google executive is probably spitting out their kombucha.

Data Whispering 101 with Claude

On top of last week’s craziness with Computer Use, Anthropic also announced its revamped data analysis capabilities.

Claude can now process data, conduct analysis, and produce real-time insights by writing and running code.

It’s still in “Feature Preview,” but here is how you can use it:

  1. Activate the feature by clicking on the icon in the left settings panel. Navigate to “Feature Preview” and toggle it “On” for the Analysis tool.

  2. Upload your data in CSV format. The data can be about anything, such as customer interactions, sales data, product engagement, server performance logs, etc.

  3. Give Claude a prompt. You can give Claude a specific prompt to analyze the data, or you can let Claude analyze the data on its own.

  4. Let Claude get to work and generate insights!

🔥 Here’s a sample prompt to get you started:

I have a dataset in CSV format that I'd like to analyze. I'd like detailed statistical insights, visualizations, and trend analysis. Please focus on [specific metrics/columns] and help me understand:

1. Key summary statistics and distributions
2. Any notable patterns or anomalies
3. Correlations between variables

[Insert any specific analysis you're interested in]

Please show your work step by step and include clear visualizations. If you spot anything interesting or unexpected in the data, let me know.

Apple Intelligence Has Entered Your Notifications

Hold onto your turtlenecks, folks - Apple has officially rolled out iOS 18.1, featuring its latest AI capabilities under the “Apple Intelligence” banner. With AI integrated throughout the operating system, the new update aims to elevate user experiences, from enhanced photo management to smarter notifications.

How to get started:

After downloading iOS 18.1, head to the Settings app, tap the new “Apple Intelligence & Siri” setting, and request beta access. Keep in mind, some AI features are still on the way, but here’s what’s available now:

  • Siri Gets a Glow-Up: Siri now sports a sleek, multicolor glow around the screen’s edges, matching its expanded capabilities.

  • Writing Tools Fix Your Messages: Apple’s new AI writing assistant helps polish your grammar, spelling, and style in Mail, Notes, and even third-party apps (saving you from embarrassing typos or awkward texts).

  • Notification Summaries: Instead of scrolling through endless threads or missed notifications, the system summarizes key decisions—like dinner plans in group texts—so you get the important details without the fluff.

  • Record and Summarize Phone Calls: Now you can record calls directly from the Phone app and receive an instant summary of the key points discussed.

  • Take Audio Notes with Summaries: Use the Notes app to record audio, and the system will generate a handy summary of the recording.

It’s worth noting that these new AI features are only available on newer phones and devices (iPhone 13 and forward). I’ll be jumping into testing these out myself, but it looks promising so far from Apple.

Grok Gets Eyes That Work Better Than Mine

Elon Musk’s xAI has upgraded its Grok AI model with image-understanding capabilities, allowing paid X users to upload images and ask the AI questions about them.

This means it can now process images as input. I gave it a spin with a test image, and in my opinion, it may need some smoothing:

I don’t think it was able to carry the full nuance of our beloved Jensen Huang meme from last edition. This again, speaks to the trend of every LLM going inherently multimodal.

Google may be close to unveiling Jarvis, an AI agent that can operate a web browser to help users automate everyday tasks.

While its developers were trying to record a coding demonstration, the latest version of Claude 3.5 Sonnet — Anthropic's current flagship AI — got off track and produced some "amusing" moments, like browsing through beautiful photos of Yellowstone National Park.

NVIDIA briefly surpassed Apple on Friday to become the biggest company in the world, thanks to high demand for its artificial intelligence chips.

The Neural Network

I literally laughed out loud when I saw this one…

The results are in from our last poll about Claude’s Computer Use, and we saw a dead even split!

There are some real futurists here (but also people who aren’t so keen to hand over their mouses).
