OpenAI Wants to Build the iPhone of AGI, and Jony Ive Might Actually Do It

OpenAI just made its biggest bet yet, and no, it’s not another chatbot.

They’re spending $6.5 billion to acquire IO, a hardware startup led by none other than Jony Ive, the man who helped create the iPhone, iPad, and just about every sleek Apple device you’ve ever drooled over.

The mission? Build a new generation of AI-native products that could define how we interact with artificial general intelligence (AGI)…

What’s Going On?

• OpenAI is acquiring IO in an all-stock deal, bringing on Ive’s 55-person team and forming a new hardware division under VP of Product Peter Welinder.

• As part of the deal, Mr. Ive and his design studio, LoveFrom, will remain independent and continue to work on projects separate from OpenAI.

• This is more than a design play. It’s about creating a physical interface for AGI, something that moves beyond the screens and keyboards we’ve used for decades…

So What?

Okay wow. If they pull this off, it could be the biggest leap in consumer tech since the iPhone. Imagine a world where interacting with AGI isn’t just a chat window, but it’s part of how you see, hear, and move through the world.

AI Takes Center Stage at Google I/O 2025

Google’s I/O 2025 conference just wrapped—and surprise, surprise—it’s all about AI.

From a new Gemini-powered search experience to an assistant that can see through your camera, Google of course is reimagining how we interact with the digital world.

Here’s what stood out:

• Google AI Mode: The search bar becomes a smart assistant. Compare products, create charts, ask follow-ups, and even let it shop for you, all inside Search.

• Project Astra: Google’s universal AI assistant gets more hands-on. Its latest iteration sees through your camera, reads your emails, and books repairs before you even ask.

• Imagen and Veo Upgrades: Google’s image model Imagen 4 nails text and fine detail. The new Veo 3 generates full videos with sound. And yes, they’re thinking Hollywood.

• Google’s AI Filmmaking App: Flow is a new tool that lets you stitch together AI-generated clips, scenes, and transitions into short films, powered by Veo and Gemini.

• Gemini 2.5 Pro: A new “Deep Think” mode tackles complex math and coding by simulating multiple possible solutions before answering.

• The new AI Ultra Plan: $250/month for Google’s top-tier AI power users. Includes unlimited Deep Research, 30TB storage, YouTube Premium, and early access to Google’s most experimental tools.

So What?

Google is literally rebuilding products from the ground up (with AI of course).

Search becomes a conversation, assistants get cameras, and your notes turn into dynamic knowledge hubs. If this is the direction we’re heading, Google wants Gemini to be the compass, the map, and the driver.
