You Must Be This Old to Scroll (Says AI)

If you’re a teen trying to sneak into the grown-up version of Instagram, AI is officially on to you…

Meta just rolled out a new system that uses AI to detect users who may have fibbed about their age, and automatically enrolls them into Instagram’s more restricted Teen Account experience, even if their birthday says otherwise.

Here’s how it works:

  • Instagram’s AI looks for clues like birthday posts, user reports, and activity patterns to figure out if someone is actually a teen (even if their profile says they’re 27 and love “tax documents”).

  • If the system flags an account, it’s switched to a Teen Account. That means limited messaging from strangers, tighter content controls, and parental permission needed to tweak privacy settings.

  • Meta says it’s already enrolled 54 million users globally into Teen Accounts, with 97% of teens aged 13–15 staying in the protected experience.

So What?

With AI stepping in as the new hall monitor, platforms are going beyond trust-and-verify to proactively protect younger users. Meta’s move represents a broader trend in AI-driven digital safety—one where platforms are preemptively shaping safer online spaces.

In a world where algorithms are often blamed for harmful content, it’s refreshing to see them used to raise the bar for responsibility, especially when the stakes involve kids navigating the digital world.

The Startup That Wants to Fire Everyone

Tamay Besiroglu, co-founder of the AI research nonprofit Epoch, just launched a new startup called Mechanize, and its mission is as bold as it is controversial: “the full automation of all work.”

That includes white-collar jobs, long-horizon tasks, and even coordination-heavy workflows. The company plans to build virtual work environments and training data to help AI agents learn how to do everything humans do at work…

Are you sure this isn’t an episode of Black Mirror?

  • Mechanize claims the market opportunity is massive, around $60 trillion globally, or the total sum of human wages. The company is backed by big names like Nat Friedman, Jeff Dean, and Patrick Collison.

  • Critics argue that replacing human labor en masse could lead to widespread unemployment and deepen inequality. Even some of Besiroglu’s colleagues at Epoch are distancing themselves from the project, with one calling it a “comms crisis.”

  • Besiroglu insists that full automation will lead to “vast abundance” and higher living standards, with people earning income through rents, dividends, or welfare. But skeptics point out the obvious; if no one has a job, who’s buying all the stuff the AI agents are producing?

So What?

Mechanize is saying the quiet part out loud - the endgame of AI isn’t just assistance, it’s replacement.

Whether that’s a utopia or a dystopia depends on who owns the agents, how wealth is distributed, and whether society is ready for an economy where human labor is optional.

One thing’s clear: the debate over AI and jobs just got A LOT more real…

Turn Yourself into an Action Figure with GPT-4o

Forget the Studio Ghibli trend, there’s a new viral image format taking over the internet: the blister-packaged action figure, which by the way, you can create in seconds using GPT-4o inside ChatGPT.

Here’s how you can create your own action figure:

  1. Navigate to ChatGPT.

  2. Toggle the image generation by typing /Create Image

  3. Paste and personalize this prompt:

Make a picture of a 3D action figure toy, named "YOUR-NAME-HERE" Make it look like it's being displayed in a transparent plastic package, blister packaging model. The figure is as in the photo, [GENDER/HIS/HER/THEIR] style is very [DEFINE EVERYTHING ABOUT HAIR/FACE/ETC]. On the top of the packaging there is a large writing: "[NAME-AGAIN]" in white text then below it "[TITLE]” Dressed in [CLOTHING/ACCESSORIES]. Also add some supporting items for the job next to the figure, like [ALL-THE-THINGS]. The packaging design is minimalist, cardboard colour, cute toy style sold in stores. The style is cartoonish, cute but still neat, also put [BRAND] logo in the top right corner.
